More than a dozen former prison inmates gathered in the Capitol to ask for more funding for drug rehab programs and community-based corrections last week. Rally organizer Mario Hayslett says the key to helping most criminals stay out of trouble is counseling, a job and supportive communities. Hayslett has organized a Des Moines group that's working to reduce crime through criminal justice reform. He introduced several former inmates, who said counseling and drug rehab changed their lives. Activists and some lawmakers joined the former inmates today. Davenport Republican Maggie Tinsman told the group about a bill that would reduce the minimum amount of time required to be served for certain crimes. Clive Republican Gene Maddox says the state needs to put money into community-based corrections. |
