An inmate charged with murder has died after falling 80 feet while trying to escape the DeKalb County jail. Stephon McClendon, 34, tried to use bed sheets tied to his body to lower himself from an air conditioning vent on the jails eighth floor, where he had been housed, authorities said. Spokeswoman Mikki Jones said a jail employee heard the vent grate strike the ground about 4 a.m. on April 12. The worker found McClendon on the ground, unable to move and faintly calling for help. McClendon was brought to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died 11 hours later. He had been charged in slaying of 24-year-old Pellonicia Hough. Her body was found with stab wounds in the neck March 16 in a house she shared with McClendon and her brother, Alvin Graham. |
