The state's interim public safety director said he's considering bringing in mainland corrections officials to evaluate the design of Halawa prison. James Propotnick said he wants to see if design and construction flaws enabled three Halawa inmates to escape two weeks ago. Albert Batalona, 27, David Scribner, 20, and Warren Elecker, 25, were arrested six days after their escape. State prison officials refuse to describe in detail how they think the men escaped, but law enforcement sources told KITV 4 News how the plan worked. Sources said two inmates in one cell and one in another broke through their cell walls and may have used 'metal bars' to dig their way through to a utility area between the two cells. Prison employees did not notice the holes, which were quite small. Once in the utility area, sources said the inmates removed air conditioning vents from the floor, creating a hole for them to jump through to a larger utility room in the basement. Next, sources said the inmates forced their way out of a locked door to the prison yard. They didn't have to go far toward freedom. The door was just a few steps away from the unguarded main prison gate. A security evaluation team from the National Institute of Corrections might be brought in to look at the facility. Propotnick believes the escapees found the only weak point in the prison and that no one should be able to break out. |
