Due to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) concerns, Toronto-area inmates have not been serving weekend sentences at the Millbrook Correctional Centre. That restriction came into effect March 28 and only applies to inmates from the Toronto area and Durham Region who are serving their jail time on weekends. Instead, the prisoners are put in home custody and checked periodically by police and corrections officials. Julia Noonan , a spokesperson with the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, says because these inmates are in the community all week, it's safer and easier to have them serve their sentences at home for the time being. 'It's a precautionary measure with respect to SARS,' she says. Every inmate coming into a correctional facility is screened for the virus, she explains, but because these inmates only come on the weekends, the amount of work to screen them is very time consuming. The effect on Millbrook is minimal, she adds, with perhaps fewer than 50 inmates on any given weekend now being placed in home custody instead of that facility. |
