A former assistant deputy warden at Rikers Island in New York was sentenced Monday to one to three years in prison for his role in the theft of a $250,000 Salvador Dali sketch from the prison. Mitchell Hochhauser, 40, pleaded guilty in September to one count of attempted grand larceny. Still awaiting trial are co-defendants Benny Nuzzo, a former assistant deputy warden, and correction officers Timothy Pina and Greg Sokol. The sketch depicting the crucifixion of Jesus was a jailhouse fixture since 1965, when Dali planned a visit to Rikers. The artist instead called in sick, sending a note that promised "a wonderful gift for the prisoners." He zipped off the crucifixion sketch in his hotel and it was placed in the prison dining room. The sketch was reported missing on March 1, 2003 when someone noticed that the original had been replaced by a copy. While Hochhauser has claimed that the Dali ink and pencil sketch was destroyed by Nuzzo, city officials still hope for its recovery. It was not immediately clear whether Hochhauser will be held at Rikers Island. |
