A Pima County corrections officer has resigned and is in jail on suspicion of having sex with a female inmate, officials said April 22. Officer Vincent W. Best, 33, was charged with five counts of unlawful sexual conduct of a correctional employee with a person in custody, according to Deputy Steve Easton of the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Best was arrested and booked into the Pima County jail, where the jail staff is watching him closely, said Bureau Chief Martha Cramer, who is in charge of Pima County corrections. 'He's lost everything, or he must feel like he has,' she said. According to Cramer, the incidents took place April 18 over a short period of time. The victim, a 22-year-old in for a probation violation, eventually told another inmate, who then informed the staff of the incident on April 21. Best was placed on administrative leave after an initial investigation, and he later resigned. He is being held away from other inmates, Cramer said. Best is married and has two children in his family. The incident is hitting Best's co-workers hard, Cramer said. 'The jail staff is going through a variety of emotions, as you can probably understand. They're devastated,' Cramer said. 'Some of them have known him for a long time, and they feel betrayal and anger, as well as compassion and confusion.' Best has been a county corrections officer since January 1996. He rose to the rank of sergeant but was demoted in January after charges of sexual harassment were made by a staff member. 'There was no reason that we would be led to believe something more would happen,' Cramer said. |
