A Kentucky mother held hostage in her home by an escaped inmate caught a break when a neighbor picked up a note the mother had dropped out the window.
Tiffany White, 21, scribbled a few sentences on a sheet of paper and threw it out the window, McCracken County Chief Deputy Sheriff Terry Long said. A neighbor found it around 2 p.m. on Sunday and called police.
White, her 4- and 1-year-old sons had been held by the inmate, Troy Allen, for two days, police said. Allen had escaped from the McCracken County Regional Jail.
Long posed as a utility worker and knocked on her apartment door about 30 minutes after the note was found.
'I told them I needed to check the gas line,' he said.
Long tried to open the door, but it was locked.
'I yelled that I was going to have to get the police if she didn't open the door,' he said. White tossed her keys out a window, and Long opened the door.
Long found Allen inside, squeezed into an 18-inch-by-18-inch air duct. 'I don't know how in the world he got in there,' Long said.
Police found an unloaded .22-caliber rifle in the apartment, Allen didn't have any weapons.
White and her children were unharmed, Long said.
Allen, 24, of Paducah, escaped from jail on March 26. He had been serving just over a year for possession of a controlled substance and other minor charges.
