| Inmates Find 'Wormlike' Bugs in Food |

Some kind of bug was discovered mixed in with boiled peas on the trays of 25 to 30 Marion County Jail inmates on Sunday, officials said. Maj. Michael Turner said no one ate the contaminated food, prepared with the assistance of inmates under the guidance of an outside catering firm. 'The sheriff's very upset about it and is going to keep a close eye on the situation,' Turner said. Turner said the bugs were brownish white and 'wormlike.' The Marion County Health Department is investigating an anonymous complaint that the bugs were maggots. Sheriff Frank Anderson called Festa Catering owner Matthew Iaria to his office Tuesday. Iaria's firm has supervised all meal preparation at the jail for more than seven years. Turner said Iaria has been asked to provide written assurances it will not happen again. Iaria confirmed the contamination but refused to say it was a bug. 'It was something foreign,' he said. 'Something real tiny. It could have been the husk of the peas.' Iaria is related to the owners of Iaria's Italian Restaurant on the Near Eastside, but he has no involvement in that business. Whatever the foreign objects were, Iaria said they were boiled along with the peas for more than three hours. He said he no longer will use dried peas in jail food and added that Tuesday's jail food was free of foreign objects. 'We don't like for it to happen,' Iaria said. 'It's embarrassing, and we're going to take care of the problem.' An Oct. 15 inspection of meal service at the jail found minor problems with workers' hygiene and sanitation -- problems fixed by the time of an Oct. 22 reinspection, according to the Marion County Health Department. Indiana Civil Liberties Union lawyer Ken Falk said the contamination only leads to further stress on an overcrowded jail. 'They shouldn't have food that's been contaminated like this,' he said. |
