Convicted killer Roger Dale Vaughn was executed Tuesday night for the 1991 slaying of a Vernon, Texas woman. The victim was 66-year-old Dora Watkins. Vaughn was an escapee from the Lubbock County Jail when Watkins was raped and strangled at her home. Investigators said Vaughn knew the woman's son. Vaughn was the 14th convicted killer executed this year in Huntsville, Texas. He was 48. Vaughn smiled, laughed and mouthed to relatives that he loved them, but he had no final statement. Instead, Vaughn asked a prison chaplain to read Psalm 103, which talks about God's compassion and repeatedly uses and ends with the phrase, 'Praise the Lord, oh my soul.'' He was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m. Central Time. |
