Inmates at the Brevard County Detention Center are being treated and the pod they were staying in disinfected after four tested positive for staph infection.
Brevard County Sheriff's spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said four out of 246 inmates housed in the maximum-security pod at the jail tested positive for a the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Staphylococcus aureus are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Staph bacteria are one of the most common forms of skin infections are typically treated without antibiotics. Staph infections can cause different kinds of illness including skin infections and pneumonia if left untreated. All of the infected inmates have only skin infections, Martinez said.
The pod where the inmates are housed has been locked down and a team is going through individual cells checking inmates for signs of infection. In addition, a cleaning crew is on scene.
Martinez said the first infection was reported Oct. 27 and two more were reported over the weekend. The Brevard County Health Department has been notified.
