| Ala. Parolee Held in Funeral Home Killings |

A parolee just four months out of prison walked into a funeral home and killed two employees and a casket company driver, apparently to steal their wallets, authorities said. Christopher Shane Hyde, who had served time in Florida for murder, was arrested several hours after Wednesday's shootings when he arrived on a bus in Atlanta. The shootings at the Bell Funeral Home shocked residents of the close-knit coal town of 2,600 northwest of Birmingham. Rick Peterson, 50, had been the pastor of Faith Worship Center in Sumiton and worked at the funeral home with manager June Williams, 61. Randle Lane, 66, a semiretired casket company manager, was making a delivery when all three were shot to death, authorities said. 'I've been district attorney 28 years and this is the first time (Walker County) has had a triple murder,' Walker County District Attorney Charles Baker told The Birmingham News. Hyde, 30, had been released in November from a Florida prison, where he had served time for murder, authorities said. Baker said Hyde was charged with capital murder because the killing apparently were committed during another felony, a robbery. Atlanta police were waiting when he arrived by bus Wednesday evening from Birmingham, police said. Baker did not immediately return a call Thursday seeking further detail, including why Hyde became a suspect. The three victims were shot in a room where they had gone to prepare a body for burial, said funeral director Leland Tingle, who found the bodies. Tingle, himself a pastor at the Briarcliff Church of God, said he had left the funeral home briefly to do a repair job, and when he returned, 'it was awful quiet in there.' |
