An inmate who would have been eligible for release this month is accused of killing a state prison guard in Nashville, Tenn. two weeks ago, officials said yesterday. The Tennessee Department of Correction has obtained an arrest warrant charging inmate Malcom Jenkins with murder. He is accused of killing officer Fred Hyatt on Nov. 8 at Middle Tennessee Correctional Complex in west Nashville. Prison officials said they thought that Hyatt, 59, was killed during an escape plot involving five inmates. None of them fled, but Hyatt, who had worked for the prison for nearly 19 years, was beaten and strangled. Hyatt had planned to retire in January. Hyatt's wife, Won Hui Hyatt, said her husband never had a problem with any of the inmates before. ''This has been a difficult time for this department,'' Correction Commissioner Quenton White said in a prepared statement. ''Our internal affairs division has worked around the clock to bring this investigation to a close. While parts of the investigation continue, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Hyatt.'' Additional charges against other inmates could be filed. Correction officials refused to comment further on the slaying or the investigation and referred questions to the Davidson County district attorney's office. Jenkins had been in prison since June on theft and weapons charges. |
