| Juvenile Detention Officer Arrested on Sex-Crime Charges |

An officer at the Quay County Juvenile Detention Center in New Mexico has been arrested and charged with sex crimes against three minors who were in custody. Robert Gonzales, 27, of Tucumcari, was arrested Monday. He is charged with two counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, state police said. The ages of the three girls were not disclosed. The arrest is the result of an eleven-month investigation, state police Lt. Robert San Roman said. The investigation began when state police received a complaint from a man who said his stepdaughter had been sexually assaulted at the detention center. A state police officer then interviewed the girl and Gonzales before turning the case over to criminal investigator Dina Orozco. Orozco said she interviewed more than 25 former and current detainees from surrounding areas since September. One girl said Gonzales was the only officer on duty when she returned to the detention center from a Portales court on July 9. According to court documents, the girl said Gonzales asked her to "flash him," and made several sexual requests. Tired of Gonzales' requests, the girl allowed him to make sexual advances, the documents state. Another girl told authorities that Gonzales made sexual advances toward her on Aug. 28. A third girl told police Gonzales made several sexual requests while she was detained from Dec. 10 to Dec. 15, 2002. Gonzales has been an officer with the juvenile jail for more than a year. Lt. Don Rich of the Quay County Detention Center said he cooperated with all requests from investigators. Gonzales was being held at the Quay County Detention Center on $60,000 bond. |
