An escaped convict was taken back into police custody Monday night after he was accidentally released from the Harris County Inmate Processing Center in Texas. Curtis Joseph Duboise, 40, and another inmate were waiting to be handed over to TransCorp -- a private company that transports inmates across the United States -- when somehow, a deputy accidentally released the convict. "The detention officer that was working that particular area somehow became confused and thinking possibly that he was a releasee, instead of going to TransCorp, he was released and walked out of the facility," Harris County Sheriff's Department Capt. Robert Van Pelt said. The escaped convict was dressed in plain clothes when he left the processing center, which is why police believe he made the escape and tried to blend in with Houston's homeless community. "He is a transient. He doesn't have any funds for transportation or food so we felt he was in the immediate vicinity," Van Pelt said. Police, deputies, K-9 units and the Gulf Coast Task Force searched downtown Houston for five hours Monday night. Officials found the escapee around 8 p.m., walking in the 2100 block of Main Street near the Pierce Elevated Freeway. Duboise was originally convicted of assault and is a parole violator from Illinois. He now faces federal escape charges. |
