| Two jail officials arrested over alleged sex with inmate |

Two Brunswick County. N.C. corrections officers have been charged in connection with an alleged sexual encounter with an inmate. Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett said the incident took place between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Nov. 18. The officers were charged Saturday. Hewett said while two officers were on rounds making sure inmates were accounted for, officer Moraima Cortes opened the door to the women's dormitory and took inmate Pamela Jo Rinehart, 26, from her cell. The inmate proceeded to have consensual sex with Officer Shady Leonard Daniels III in the nurse's station, where there are no cameras, Hewett said. After interviews with inmates, workers and the two suspects Saturday, the two officers were arrested. Cortes, 31, was charged with a misdemeanor for willful failure to discharge her duties. Daniels, 23, was charged with a class E felony of sexual activity by a custodian. Daniels' first court appearance is scheduled for Monday morning. If convicted, he could face 20 to 24 months in prison. Cortes has a court date scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 20. If convicted, she could face up to 120 days in jail. Neither returned calls for comment Sunday. The inmate, who is awaiting trial for several breaking and entering charges, will remain jailed in the Brunswick County facility, Hewett said. |
