| Hawaii Escapees Back Behind Bars |

The three convicts that escaped from Halawa prison on April 4 have been captured, according to Honolulu police. Albert Batalona , 27, David Scribner, 20, and Warren Elecker, 25, are in police custody. Scriber was the first to be picked up at 12:05 p.m. on April 10. A police officer spotted him walking in Punaluu. 'I put him through the arrest procedures that we're trained in and he refused at first, saying he didn't want to go back to prison and said I'd have to shoot him. After several other commands for him to comply, he did,' Honolulu Police Department Officer Rik Orton said. Batalona was apprehended next at 12:15 p.m. A police officer spotted him riding on a city bus in Kaneohe. He was arrested without incident, police said. Elecker was arrested on in front of Puohala Elementary School and Castle High School. Police got word that Elecker was the passenger in a white Ford pickup truck. At about 12:29 p.m., officers spotted the truck traveling on Kaneohe Bay Drive and stopped it. 'We weren't sure if they were armed (or) what kind of arms they were carrying. It was a felony traffic stop, ordering everybody out at gunpoint,' HPD Sgt. Masen Kuaiwa said. Police said the truck's driver was Zeblon Bates also known as Zeblon Thomas. Both men were arrested without a struggle. Police said at first Bates told them he picked up Elecker hitching and didn't know him, but after questioning he was arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution. All three told police they had been hiding in Hauula Valley since their escape. They said they heard law enforcement officers searching for them night and day. Dozens of law enforcement officials had surrounded the area. 'The pressure was always in there night and day, so that pressure, we feel, gave them that impetus to come back out of that valley,' HPD Asst. Chief Boise Correa said. |
