A corrections officer won a $150,000 lawsuit against the Connecticut Department of Correction last week, after a jury found that a deputy warden defamed him and caused emotional distress,
The New Britain Superior Court jury awarded Kevin Gray $50,000 on the defamation claim and $100,000 on the emotional distress claim. Gray is a 17-year veteran of the DOC.
In his 13th year, while working at the Manson Youth Institute in Cheshire, Gray was accused of sexual improprieties and drug use by then Deputy Warden James Murdoch, said Gray's lawyer Eric Brown. Although the officer was quickly exonerated of the charges, Gray maintained that there was never any substance to the allegations and Murdoch's harassment was meant to force Gray to resign.
The allegations continued to impact Gray at work and made it difficult to garner respect from the inmates, Brown said.
Gray sued the department and Murdoch for defamation of character and emotional distress. After a three-day trial, the jury deliberated for six hours before granting the awards.
According to department Spokesman Edward Ramsey, Murdoch no longer works at Manson, but was transferred to Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Uncasville.
Ramsey did not know if the transfer was a result of the situation with Brown.
Ramsey would not comment on the lawsuit, as he had not seen the decision, he said.
Murdoch could not be reached for comment.
