Three California men convicted in the murder of a Panhandle drug dealer have been accused of threatening inmates in the Idaho prison system. Authorities said the three have been locked down in segregation cells at the main prison because of what was termed menacing behavior. According to court documents, Eddie Mendiola, 34, his brother, Piero Mendiola, 31, and brother-in-law Marco Antonio Garcia, 32, all of Lake Forest, Calif., "made several threats against other inmates." The three pleaded guilty on Aug. 27 to being accessories to a felony in the murder of Brendan Butler, 20, the Coeur d´Alene man prosecutors claim ran a lucrative marijuana smuggling operation. All three were sentenced to four years in prison but were given the opportunity for probation after six months if they successfully complete a prison boot camp program. The alleged threatening behavior has apparently disrupted that plan. A third brother, Giovanni Mendiola, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for killing Butler and was sentenced to eight years to life in prison. |
