Yamhill County, Ore. officials are seeking permission from the federal government to force-feed a jail inmate who has been on a 10-day hunger strike in an effort to avoid deportation. Stephan E. Dogaru, 31, is originally from Romania but was detained by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. He has refused food and water since Nov. 10, and officials at the jail are seeking permission for a doctor to feed him through a tube. Dogaru, who has a wife and a young son living in Washington County, has said he wants to stay in the United States with his family. Sheriff Jack Crabtree said hunger strikes are not a common occurrence in the jail, and for one to last this long is "a big deal." "We usually experience one or two a year, but they are of short duration," Crabtree said. According to federal Bureau of Prisons guidelines, a physician may order intravenous feeding treatment without an inmate's consent if it is deemed medically necessary to sustain the inmate's life. |
