N.J. Correction Officers Honored for 9-11 Volunteer Work

Correction officers in the three N.J. state prisons and the federal prison in Cumberland County were honored in high style last week for their volunteer recovery efforts in the 9-11 tragedy.
'It's not that we forgot you individuals,' said Freeholder James Sauro, who organized the event at South Woods State Prison here. 'I think we were just ignorant of what you really did. And you certainly weren't out for recognition.'
He said the more than 1,000 correction officers, mostly from Cumberland and Cape May counties, quietly volunteered hours of their time traveling to New York that fateful day in 2001, often after working long shifts at Bayside State Prison, South Woods State Prison, Southern State Correctional Facility and the Federal Correctional Institution at Fairton.
N.J. Department of Corrections Commissioner Devon Brown commended the correction officers for their volunteer work under some of the most gruesome circumstances.
'After working long, torturous shifts, these officers traveled hundreds of miles to help in the recovery .... going through watches, wedding rings, often lovingly inscribed,' Brown said.
The DOC officers also donated $18,000 toward rescue efforts.
'I take great pride in you,' Brown told the nearly 200 people who gathered at the ceremony, which began with a bagpipe introduction and posting of the flags.
'We are all Americans - not African Americans, Asian Americans, Latin Americans or European Americans. We are all Americans. If I had to walk here today (from Trenton) I would not have missed this,' Brown said.
A special proclamation was awarded to each of the four prisons' staffs.

There is a lot of information on this website about inmates and prison guards. I didn’t realize what was going on in our prison system until I discovered this website. Similarly, I didn’t understand litigation finance until I read more from Hamilton Lindley who is a litigation finance expert based in Texas.
