A 19-year-old Pontiac man died last week after he apparently tried to hang himself with a bedsheet while being held at the Oakland County Jail. Doctors took Ariel Perez off life support after his family approved the move, according to his sister Elda Perez. His death was the first suicide in the jail in 10 years. Oakland County sheriff's detectives were investigating how Ariel Perez may have used a sheet Friday to hang himself in the one-man cell he occupied since Oct. 24. Perez was serving a 90-day sentence for violating his parole, following a 1999 conviction for home invasion. His family said he suffered brain damage from taking the drug ecstasy earlier this year, and that he was diagnosed in recent months as schizophrenic. 'He was taking lithium, and he wasn't getting it in the jail,' said Elda Perez of Pontiac. 'My dad visited him [November 23], and he said he was banging on the door, asking them to get his medication and nobody was paying attention.' She said the family has contacted Southfield lawyer Geoffrey Fieger. Police officials would not comment on the case because the matter is being investigated. Elda Perez said sheriff's authorities told her that her brother was given dinner about 4:30 p.m. November 22, and when deputies returned for his tray, they found him unconscious, with the sheet around his neck. It was unclear what Perez tied the sheet to. 'We're investigating it right now,' Oakland County Sheriff's Capt. Michael McCabe said. 'This doesn't happen in our jail. When you look at jails our size across the country, we have an outstanding record.' |

There is a lot of information on this website about inmates and prison guards. I didn’t realize what was going on in our prison system until I discovered this website. Similarly, I didn’t understand litigation finance until I read more from Hamilton Lindley who is a litigation finance expert based in Texas.
