Officers Foil Attempted Penn. Prison Break

The Dauphin County Prison is under a lockdown after officials said six prisoners tried to escape.
They tried something prison officials had never seen before -- they used their shoes to try to escape.
A corrections officer found a piece of metal that served as a saw hidden in a cell toilet Sunday night. The metal is a support used in shoes. The prisoners used it to cut into the bars on their cell windows. Officials said the shoes were not prison-issued; instead, a prisoner wore them in, knowing about the metal strips.
Prison officials said they have no idea how long the prisoners have been at it, but they think six prisoners in three different cells were in on the scheme.
The prison is now under a lockdown as authorities search all cells and shoes.
Prison officials said the prisoners never came close to escaping.
'The facility has several safeguards, that even if the individuals were able to get completely through the bar on the outside, there was another bar on the inside and then the security glass that we have. It would have been almost impossible for them to break it with what they had at their disposal,' prison warden Dominick DeRose said.
The six prisoners will be talking with county detectives. They could face escape charges and the prison will punish them for destroying county property.
WGAL reported that all the prisoners involved were behind bars for minor charges.
Prison officials are uncertain how long the lockdown will take.
