Police in Huntington Beach, Calif. apprehended Paul Lupien early Monday morning, about 15 hours after he escaped from Salinas Valley State Prison. Lupien, 35, had escaped from the minimum security section at the Soledad prison, where he was serving a sentence of three years and eight months for grand theft, forgery and burglary. He began serving time in January, said prison spokesman Eloy Medina. Medina said prison officials weren't sure how Lupien got away. "We are still trying to determine that," Medina said. "He may have jumped over the chain-link fence." More than 200 inmates are housed in each of two dormitories in the minimum security section. One officer per shift is assigned to each dorm. Medina said the prison staff issued an all-points bulletin immediately after the escape was discovered. Police in Huntington Beach arrested Lupien after receiving a call reporting a suspicious person. They found him near some garages on a residential street around 3:30 a.m., said police Lt. J.B. Hume. This is the first time in three years that there has been an escape at Salinas Valley State Prison, Medina said. He added that there has never been an escape from the maximum-security facility. Medina said once the prison completes its investigation as to how Lupien escaped, they will review procedures to see if any changes need to be made. |
