The head of the state's prisons, criticized since pedophile priest John J. Geoghan was killed by a fellow inmate, has taken a medical leave, his spokesman said. Massachusetts Department of Correction chief Michael T. Maloney, who began his leave last week, defended his management of state prisons last month, telling lawmakers that the system is safe, despite questions raised since Geoghan was beaten and strangled in his cell. Corrections spokesman Justin Latini said his office was not releasing any further information on Maloney's leave. Public Safety Secretary Edward Flynn on Monday appointed DOC deputy commissioner Kathleen M. Dennehy as acting commissioner, Latini said. Republican Gov. Mitt Romney appointed an independent commission to investigate the prison system after Geoghan's killing raised questions of inmate abuse, staffing levels and safety issues. Geoghan was killed Aug. 23 in Souza-Baronowski Correctional Institute in Shirley. Fellow inmate Joseph L. Druce has pleaded innocent to the killing. Geoghan's death was just one of many problems under Maloney's watch, said Leslie Walker, director of Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services, a prisoners' advocacy group. Maloney, a 29-year veteran of the department, has been commissioner for the past seven years. Last month, the union representing Massachusetts corrections officers called for Maloney's resignation, saying he has created a crisis in the prison system by mismanaging funds and failing to provide adequate staff and training. |
