Oklahoma Inmate Dies in Struggle With Jailers

A man whom law officers say was having drug-induced hallucinations has become the second Rogers County, Okla., jail inmate to die while in custody this year.
Rogers County jailers were trying to restrain Alan Ray Knight last Monday when he lost consciousness during the scuffle and began turning blue, Sheriff Jerry Prather said.
Four jailers tried to keep Knight, 43, from harming himself, Prather said. He began taking bites out of his arms and yelled that worms were coming out of his skin, authorities said.
He was taken by ambulance to Claremore Regional Hospital about 5:30 p.m. Knight died later that night.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma Department of Health are involved in the probe of Knight's death, Prather said.
He was arrested and jailed on five misdemeanor complaints, including indecent exposure, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.
Knight was taken into custody near Inola after he created a disturbance at a nearby nursing home, Prather said.
Deputies took Knight to the hospital for treatment before taking him to jail. A blood test showed he had a high amount of methamphetamine in his blood, Prather said.
Jailers placed Knight in an isolation cell where he could be watched because of his erratic behavior and mood swings, Prather said.
The state Medical Examiner's Office hasn't determined a cause of death.
The first Rogers County inmate to die while in custody this year was Rodney Cole Walker, 43, Prather said. Cole died July 13 in what coroners determined was dehydration due to alcohol withdrawal. The manner of death was ruled natural, Prather said.
