A man who escaped from a Louisiana detention center last year was arrested last week in Lancaster, authorities said. John Birdsong, 36, was awaiting transfer to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, La., to serve a nine-year sentence when he escaped from the Madison Parish Detention Center in Tallulah, La. on Nov. 13, 2001. Birdsong was captured in a Lancaster home following an investigation by U.S. Marshals. Deputy U.S. Marshal Trent Touchstone said Birdsong was to serve the nine-year sentence for parole violation based on an original charge of forcible rape. He was wanted by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections for the offense of escape. Birdsong has an extensive criminal history that includes arrests for rape, drug offenses, thefts, and other less serious charges. |
