| N.Y. Jail Deputy Suspended for Phone Call |

An Onondaga County jail deputy was suspended for three days for saying ''Die! Die! Die!'' over the phone to another deputy, a union official said. The incident was investigated as possibly racially motivated because the deputy who received the call Wednesday is African American, said Anthony Callisto, chief custody deputy at the Justice Center jail. The call came as U.S. Justice Department lawyers were at the jail investigating claims from 19 black deputies that they've been racially harassed and discriminated against for the past 10 to 15 years. The deputy who made the call came forward Thursday, after an internal investigation had begun, and said he thought he was calling another deputy with whom he'd frequently made prank calls, not the black deputy, Callisto said. The investigation backed up the caller's claim, he told The Post-Standard of Syracuse. Deputy Sandy Roth, vice president of the Onondaga County Deputy Sheriffs Benevolent Association, said the deputy who made the call, Robert Richardson, was suspended without pay for three days. Richardson hadn't realized Deputy Denise Campbell was at the other end of the phone, Roth said. |
