Looking for that very special, one-of-a-kind holiday gift? There's a good chance you can find it at Arizona State Prison Outlet in Florence, Arizona. And here's more good news - for the holiday shopping season, the store is open from nine to five, seven days a week. Prison inmates handcraft many of the unique items sold at the Arizona State Prison Outlet. Individually made, artistic leather items, such as wallets, coin purses, vests and belts start at $5 and come in a variety of sizes and styles. Unique jewelry ranges from $2 on up for everything from necklaces to bracelets and more. Shoppers who want to let the gift recipient do the hobby craft can purchase wood model kits of historical Arizona stagecoaches. The store also stocks pre-assembled units. The Prison Outlet's more popular gifts include a line of birdhouses made from colorful license plates and personalized license plates made in the Arizona Correctional Industries Industrial Yard at Florence. Other potential gift items are manufactured in specialized production facilities such as T-shirts with novelty imprints. Also, Eldarica Pine Trees are grown on the Prison Farm for holiday sale as 'living Christmas trees.' Inmates receive 75 per cent of the sale price of an item they've crafted that is sold at the Prison Outlet with the other 25 per cent allocated for store handling and processing. The store is operated by Arizona Correctional Industries (ACI) whose mission is reducing idleness while teaching good work habits. |
