A counselor at a juvenile prison was arrested on charges of beating a 16-year-old girl and another counselor was charged with not reporting the abuse. Betherea Anthony Stokes was arrested on a charge of child abuse March 16. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail after posting $5000 bail. Largo police officer Gary Lange says on March 6, the 16-year-old girl was subjected to a beating to her arms and legs at Florida Youth Academy after she was discovered talking in her room with her roommate after lights out. Investigators said they also learned that the day before their release, residents typically go through a 'beat-out' at the hands of staff similar to the kind endured by young men trying to quit a gang. Lang said the girl's release date, March 7, was the day after her alleged assault. |
