Five More Officers Attacked at N.Y. Prison

Five more New York prison officers have been attacked by inmates following a lockdown at a maximum-security facility last week, officials said.
The assaults followed a series of attacks on officers that began two weeks ago and prompted state Corrections Commissioner Glenn Goord to order the lockdown of Auburn Correctional Facility.
The latest violence occurred last Wednesday as officers opened cells to conduct searches for weapons and contraband. Two officers were treated and released from a hospital after suffering minor hand injuries when inmates fought with them. Three other officers punched by another prisoner did not require hospitalization.
The first assault happened as an officer broke up a fight during Islamic services, said Tom Butler, spokesman for the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association. Since Friday, 10 correction officers have been attacked at the prison.
The lockdown is expected to remain in effect through the weekend, said Jim Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services.
The last time a lockdown occurred at the 1,800-inmate prison, 25 southwest of Syracuse, was in early February.
