Lawsuit Filed Over Alleged Strip Searches in Maine Jail
By Associated Press
Published: 12/24/2002

A Rockland, Maine woman filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of herself and others who allegedly have been subjected to illegal strip searches at the Knox County Jail.
Laurie Tardiff's lawsuit names the county, Sheriff Danaiel Davey and several unnamed deputies.
She contends strip searches are conducted on everyone brought to the jail regardless of the reason for arrest.
Her lawyers say the state and federal governments don't conduct strip searches for the type of charges Tardiff was arrested for. She was arrested for allegedly tampering with a witness. They say Tardiff wants to stop the humiliating practice.
