Bucks Prison Inmates Demand Better Treatment
By Associated Press/KYW
Published: 12/24/2002

Female inmates at the Bucks County, Ky., Prison have rejected the county's proposed settlement of a five-year battle over their treatment.

Attorneys for the women say the county's promises are too vague and the county's proposal to monitor its own compliance with the agreement is unacceptable.

The two sides have been in court since 1997 over the county's treatment of female inmates at the jail in Doylestown Township. The federal lawsuit claims the lack of separate facilities for women who are sick or mentally ill puts inmates and guards in jeopardy. The state has cited the county for the same shortcomings in recent years.
