A former Fall River, Mass. prison officer who operated a karate school while collecting $82,500 in workers' compensation has been indicted on fraud charges. A grand jury charged Ricci DeGaetano, 35, on two counts of workers' compensation fraud and larceny over $250 by false pretense, Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly's office said. DeGaetano allegedly claimed that a 1997 fall had left him disabled and while on disability leave, he opened the Complete Karate school in Swansea. DeGaetano, who has black belt in karate, was the chief instructor and his wife acted as the straw owner, Reilly said in a statement. DeGaetano returned to work in 1998, and four months later claimed he was injured during an altercation with an inmate. He then collected workers compensation for three years, while working at the karate school almost daily, prosecutors said. The Department Of Corrections, which fired DeGaetano, said it investigated the alleged fraud and turned over the findings to prosecutors, said spokesman Justin Latini. DeGaetano, whose phone number is unlisted, could not be reached for comment by the Boston Herald. He is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 9 in Suffolk Superior Court. |
