WSFA has learned the sanitation supervisor in charge of watching the 24 trusty inmates recently at Cramton Bowl is an eight year veteran with the Montgomery City Sanitation Department. He's in his early 30s and has experience in supervising non-violent inmates on work detail. Sanitation officials aren't releasing the employee's name but did say he made a huge mistake by leaving the keys in the van. 23-year old Jareavis Johnson was able to get away by stealing a department sanitation van. Police found the van about a mile away. It had a big dent on the left side and a broken left rear wheel hubcap, but there was no sign of Johnson. Johnson's fellow inmates remember Johnson being very subtle with his escape. 'He just eased out here by himself. Everybody was supposed to be inside,' says one inmate. Sanitation department officials won't say where the supervisor was when Johnson escaped. There is a department hearing next week to get all the facts. In that hearing, the worker could get anything from a verbal reprimand to dismissal. Up until now the employee had a clean record and was considered a 'good employee.' The Montgomery Police Department in the meantime still believes its trusty policy is sound and there's no need to make changes, despite the fact that five inmates escape every year, but they're caught right away. Johnson has managed to stay on the run. 'These individuals are in jail on minor offenses. They're not killing people. At this point, we like our policy that way it is. If you look at the individual like the person who escaped, you're looking at someone who has a lot more to lose by escaping than by staying in jail,' says Lt. Huey Thornton. Jareavis Johnson was set to be released in early January from the Montgomery City jail. Now he could serve at least another year in jail, if they ever catch him. Thornton says the city sends between 15 to 30 trusty inmates on work detail everyday. |
