Pre-built Walls Speed Tenn. Jailhouse Work

It's not just another brick in the wall over at the Montgomery County Jail addition. Instead, the rapidly evolving exterior is actually made of concrete slabs covered by brick veneer.
Each prefabricated wall is bolted and welded into place at a rate of one every 30 minutes.
In one week, a five-person crew from the Local 492 Ironworkers Union in Nashville had finished the whole four-story-tall and 8-inch-thick insulated wall span on the side next to the Customs House Museum.
In about three more weeks, the entire brick facade should be finished, said Jason Stout, foreman for Precast Erectors of Hurst, Texas.
The prefabricated walls are made by Gate Bluegrass Precast, an Ashland City company.
About 360 of the wall sections were made for the jail addition, according to Michelle Johnson, the company's assistant project manager for the work.
The walls begin with the brick veneer, then a layer of concrete, followed by wire mesh, insulation, another layer of wire mesh and the final concrete layer, Johnson said.
So far, the largest slab of prefabricated wall has been 15,400 pounds, Stout said.
Had traditional brick-laying methods been used, the process would have taken much longer -- about six to eight months.
The 736-bed jail addition is expected to be finished this summer, possibly in August. Once it is completed, prisoners will be transferred to the new building.
Then crews will renovate the 1986 jail addition, and a portion of the jail built in 1957 will be torn down for a new public entrance to the attached Criminal Justice Complex.
When all the projects are finished, the jail space will increase from its 290-prisoner capacity to a maximum of 936 beds.
But officials have recommended a limit of 852 prisoners so there is room for maximum security and solitary confinement if needed.
The combined projects will cost about $33.2 million, including previously approved design and engineering fees and costs to buy land.
The expansion and renovation projects are being paid for through bonds.
