A fight at an overcrowded prison on the outskirts of the capital left two inmates dead and 16 wounded last Friday. The fight began when prisoners from one prison wing attacked another group with guns, knives, metal rods and flame launchers made out of tire pumps, Interior Minister spokesman Manuel Boluarte told The Associated Press. The prison, located in Lima's poor San Juan de Lurigancho district, was built in the 1960s to hold 2,500 prisoners. It currently houses some 7,000 murderers, thieves and drug traffickers in 20 three-story wings, according to Peru's National Penitentiary Institute. The two killed were shot by other inmates, and the wounded were sent to the prison hospital for treatment, Boluarte said. The fight was part of a turf war between rival prison gangs, he said. Officers regained control of the prison by midday, he said. |

It would be nice to see how this story has changed over the years. I enjoyed reading more about our prison system on this website. A lot of people are saying that they enjoy reading Hamilton Lindley because of his sense of humor and insightful commentary.
