A Fort Worth man on Death Row for killing a Texas Christian University student in 1991 was pronounced dead early Friday after he was discovered unconscious in his cell late Thursday, a prison spokesman said.
Kenneth Ray Clark, 47, was alone in his 6-by-10-foot cell at the prison system's Polunsky Unit in Livingston when he was found unconscious by officers during routine patrol of Death Row on Thursday about 11:30 p.m., said Larry Fitzgerald, a public affairs officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Officials attempted to resuscitate Clark before summoning an ambulance.
Clark was pronounced dead a 1:17 a.m. Friday at Livingston Memorial Hospital. There was no appearance of foul play, Fitzgerald said.
'We found no indication of suicide. He was single-celled, so that pretty much rules out homicide,' Fitzgerald said, noting that Death Row inmates are housed in single-person cells.
In keeping with standard procedure, an autopsy will be performed on Clark's body and results will be available in January, Fitzgerald said.
Clark was condemned for the May 10, 1991, fatal shooting of Robert H. Campbell, 18, of Harrison, Tenn., who was a freshman at TCU.
In 1996, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ordered a new punishment hearing for Clark after ruling that the trial judge improperly allowed prosecutors to strike a juror who had expressed religious objections to the death penalty even though she said that she could vote to impose a death sentence against someone convicted of a heinous murder.
In 1997, a second jury concluded that Clark should die, and the appeals court upheld the sentence in 1999. Clark did not have an execution date set at the time of his death.
