The District wants 31 years of federal oversight of the city's jail to end and is asking a U.S. District Court judge to make it happen. But before that can happen, the court will have to conduct a detailed review of the facility before lifting the court order. Recent incidents of violence at the city jail have left two inmates stabbed to death and a third seriously injured. DC's corrections director is calling the recent incidents random violence and believes the jail is safe and that conditions have improved to the point where the jail can run safely without court-mandated policies. He said significant improvements in record keeping and jail operations have occurred. Ending the federal oversight would return control of jail policy to the mayor and council. The jail has been on lockdown since the stabbing deaths. The two stabbings were the first fatalities to occur in the D.C. jail since 1998. According to department records, inmate assaults have declined by 80 percent in the past four years. During the same period, inmate assaults on staffers declined by 65 percent with 17 reported this year. |
