An inmate at a South Texas prison held a female medical technician hostage without injury for about three hours yesterday before peacefully surrendering to authorities, officials said.
Shortly after 11 a.m., the inmate, Charles Lewis White Jr., grabbed the technician while they were in a medical treatment area near a nurse's station at the Connally Unit, located three miles south of Kenedy, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Larry Todd said.
White held her in a nearby office, holding a sharp object close to her body, Todd said.
After talking by telephone with a TDCJ-trained hostage negotiator, the 43-year-old inmate surrendered at 2:15 p.m. and freed the 26-year-old woman, Todd said.
'There were no visible injuries on the hostage,' said Todd, who did not immediately release the woman's name. She is a correctional clinical associate who is an employee of the University of Texas Medical Branch.
White is serving a 99-year sentence for numerous offenses in Harris County, including aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, attempted aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon and assault of a public servant. He was sentenced in 1991.
'The inmate had made some demands of which the main one is a private cell,' Todd said. 'He will be placed in administrative segregation, where he will be off by himself. He had other demands which we'll look at, grievances which he felt were important to his prison lifestyle.'
Parts of the Connally Unit were locked down during the hostage situation, and there was no threat to the general public, Todd said.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco attorney that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
