Police on Monday failed to convince inmates at a Rio de Janeiro prison to end their uprising and release the seven officers they are holding hostage. Police commander Col. Renato Hottz told reporters that the rebellion began Monday morning after a mass escape attempt. A group of inmates armed with makeshift knives seized the officers while they were serving breakfast. Hottz said some 30 prisoners managed to run out the prison's front gate, but six were recaptured. Riot troops surrounded the Pedro Mello de Silva detention center, which is part of the Bangu prison complex. Close to 600 inmates are held at the prison, which has a capacity for 500. Negotiations to end the uprising broke down after 13 hours 'because there seems to be no leader among the inmates with whom to negotiate,' Hottz said. Negotiation efforts were expected to resume Tuesday. The inmates were demanding the transfer of several prisoners to other facilities, better food and the presence of journalists and representatives of human rights organizations. Hottz said that none of the hostages, who the inmates claim are tied to cooking gas canisters, has been hurt. Riots are an almost daily occurrence in Brazil's prisons, where conditions are poor and overcrowding is chronic. |
