A worker at a Houston-area prison unit was arrested and charged with felony bribery recently, accused of offering to reduce an inmate's sentence in exchange for $15,000. Investigators were interviewing Demone H. Holman, 30, as he was headed to the Harris County Jail for allegedly trying to extract money from 27-year-old Lychner State Jail inmate Edwin Yassier Careas. Officials said an informant told a Houston television station about the proposed deal and the station informed authorities, who engaged in an undercover sting operation in which Holman was given a $5,000 down payment. Holman had offered to reduce Corea's 14-month forgery sentence and remove an Immigration and Naturalization Service detainer from his record, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Larry Todd said. TDCJ employees such as Holman have no power to influence sentences or remove detainers placed by other law enforcement agencies. Holman was arrested at the northwest Harris County unit, where he has worked since April 2000 at a $30,500 annual salary. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison for the third-degree felony. The Harris County District Attorney's office, along with the TDCJ Office of Inspector General, investigated the case. |
