DNA evidence that identified suspects and led to criminal convictions will be retested because an audit raised questions about procedures used by the Houston police crime lab. The audit found that the laboratory, which has since suspended DNA testing, did not comply with FBI standards for DNA analysis, according to Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal. The audit, conducted by crime lab professionals, also said lab workers weren't properly trained and found deficiencies in interpreting and documenting DNA test results, he said. 'Nothing received to date indicates that persons have been wrongfully convicted or indicted based upon a faulty test,' Rosenthal said in a statement. He added that it did not appear any trials would need to be repeated and pending trials will take place as planned. The police department and Rosenthal's office were trying to determine how many cases were affected. DNA testing at the lab was halted after the department learned of the results of the audit December 13, Police Chief T.N. Oettmeier said. Private labs will do the retesting. |
