Fla. Jail Inmate Dies From Work Detail Injuries

A Broward County Jail inmate who was working with a crew on U.S. 27 died on Wednesday hours after he went into cardiac arrest after falling off a truck and having both of his legs run over, county Fire-Rescue and sheriff's office officials said.
The inmate, who was not immediately identified but was reported to be in his 60's, died Wednesday afternoon at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla .
The man, injured around 11:45 a.m., was bleeding heavily after the accident, so Broward Fire Rescue paramedics initially deemed the call a 'trauma alert' and asked for the county's air rescue helicopter to respond and take the man to Broward General Medical, said Assistant Fire Rescue Chief Todd LeDuc.
But paramedics could not insert a breathing tube down the injured man's throat so they scrapped the helicopter plan and headed towards the nearest hospital -- the Cleveland Clinic in Weston -- in an ambulance, which is standard protocol, LeDuc said.
En route to the Cleveland Clinic, paramedics got the man intubated so they changed course and drove directly to Broward General, which has a more advanced trauma medical team.
BSO spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla said detectives are investigating how the inmate was run over by a vehicle and questioning three other inmates assigned to the same detail.
The victim, who was assigned to the work detail picking up illegally dumped tires, was not immediately identified pending notification of next of kin. It was not immediately known why he was in the county jail.
