A detention officer was shot and wounded Thursday when an inmate overpowered her and took her gun while inside a secure parking area in the jail compound. The inmate was wounded by a deputy as he tried to escape from the Smith County (Texas) Jail. Carolyn Hudson, a 10-year veteran of the Smith County Sheriff's Office, was recovering from the gunshot wound to her leg. She was in fair condition at a Tyler hospital. James Edward Jones, 33, of Jacksonville was shot after fleeing about 50 yards. 'He didn't run fast because he was shackled,' said Maj. Mike Lusk of the Smith County Sheriff's Office. He was in critical condition after surgery Thursday afternoon. The shooting occurred as Hudson escorted Jones back to jail from a routine hospital visit, Lusk said. Jones, 33, was in jail on theft and DWI charges. He had been arrested on a theft warrant Wednesday for an alleged roofing scam in Whitehouse. 'I saw the guy come out with the handgun,' Max Clark, an employee at Terry Henson Bail Bonds, said in a story in Friday's Tyler Morning Telegraph. 'He was walking backward -- he had it stuck to his head.' Witnesses told the newspaper that Jones meandered across the street. A detention officer following Jones shouted for Jones to put down the gun, but he refused. 'At one point, he took the gun away from his mouth and yelled at the officer,' Tim Breen said. 'He put it back. He was looking around, trying to find a way to go.' |
