Snohomish County Jail inmates complained for months before police were called in to investigate a former cook's alleged sexually aggressive behavior, The Herald has learned. At least three investigations were conducted at the jail starting in midsummer, county corrections department spokesman George Hughes confirmed March 4. Police weren't called until late October. They launched an investigation examining claims that the female cook was fondling male inmates and offering to perform sex acts after they were sent to work with her in the kitchen. Why police weren't notified earlier and exactly who was involved in the jail investigations are some of the questions that need to be answered, said Susan Neely, a county executive director who oversees the jail and other criminal justice programs for County Executive Bob Drewel. 'I'm following up. I'm concerned,' Neely said recently, adding that she has launched her own investigation. Everett police have asked prosecutors to file up to four counts of misdemeanor second-degree custodial sexual misconduct against the cook. The 37-year-old Everett woman is the daughter of a high-ranking supervisor at the jail. No arrests have been made. Police began investigating in late October, just days after the cook resigned from her job as a jail contract employee. The resignation came after the third investigation by corrections staff. |
