An escape attempt by a prisoner at the Santa Fe County Detention Facility was foiled when he couldn't find his way to the roof, county authorities said. Michael Burritt, 35, allegedly broke through the ceiling above his top bunk and a metal screen to reach a crawl space between the ceiling and roof of the facility early March 7, Sheriff Greg Solano said. But once Burritt reached the crawl space, he couldn't figure out how to get to the roof, Solano said. Solano said the crawl space is very secure, adding that parts are blocked with cement. Once jail officials discovered the escape attempt, they questioned other prisoners and narrowed the suspect list down to Burritt. Burritt was arrested Jan. 31 on drug charges pending in Santa Barbara, Calif. He is also facing a charge of a felon in possession of a firearm stemming from his arrest in Madrid. Solano said he suspected Burritt's escape attempt was related to the man's scheduled extradition back to California this week. Jail officials are investigating whether the metal screen behind the ceiling's dry wall gave out. |
