Ex-Inmate Speaks In Italy Against Death Penalty
By Associated Press
Published: 03/17/2003

A former Illinois death-row inmate spoke out against capital punishment in Rome on March 8 as part of a campaign to push for a United Nations moratorium against the death penalty.
The Italian anti-death penalty group, Hands Off Cain, invited Leroy Orange and his lawyer to hold a news conference in Italy to draw attention to their cause. The group wants Italy to push for a U.N. resolution against capital punishment when it takes over the European Union rotating presidency this summer.
The 52-year-old Orange was one of four death row inmates pardoned in January by then-Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who later commuted 167 death sentences to life in prison because he lost confidence in the legal system.
Ryan said he believed Orange had been tortured into falsely confessing to the murders of four people.
Orange, who spent 19 years behind bars, said he had an 'obligation to come here and continue to speak and help fight this civil-rights cause.'
Ryan's unprecedented decision brought international attention to a state where 17 death row inmates have been found to be wrongfully convicted since capital punishment was reinstated in 1977.
'The example of Illinois should be an example for the United States and the whole world of why the death penalty is not workable,' Orange's lawyer Steven Block said.
In Chicago, John Gorman, spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office, said its prosecutors maintain their case against Orange was sound.
Italians, like other Western European countries, have been vocal opponents of the death penalty around the world.
