A Duval County prisoner was hospitalized overnight after a fight in the jail. Police said that Abdol Harirchi, 49, is at Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries after he was repeatedly beaten and kicked by four other prisoners. Harirchi was found unconscious about 11:30 p.m. February 10. Harirchi was in jail on domestic battery charges, and his original booking photo showed him with a bandage on his head from a previous injury. Four prisoners are charged with aggravated battery on a jail inmate after the incident: John Chandler, 36, who was in jail on a shoplifting charge; Antoine Drinks, 18, who also in jail on a charge of simple battery; James Dubose, 18, who was jailed for possession of stolen property; and John Waters, 19, who was arrested for charges of worthless checks. According to a witness and three of the suspects in the beating, Drinks slugged Harirchi in the face. After Harirchi fell to the floor, the witness said all four started kicking him. As the injuries were considered to be potentially life-threatening, homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. Channel 4 is gathering more information on the incident and the condition of Harirchi. We'll update this story with new details as they become available, and will have live reports on Eyewitness News at 5 p.m. |
