A study released last week by the New England Juvenile Defender Center said juvenile court judges in Maine and across New England are overworked and undertrained. According to the study, judges are forced to rush through complex cases and often send young offenders into prison-like settings instead of treatment. The study also notes that no New England state defines a distinct role for juvenile judges or requires judges to visit facilities or programs to which they commit juveniles. The problem is particularly acute in Maine because the state doesn't have a separate juvenile court, and district court judges who handle juvenile matters also juggle a full schedule of adult cases, the study says. |
