The South Dakota House of Representatives passed a bill last week to spend $11.8 million on three prison projects. The bill, which passed 48-20, would allow a 192-bed addition onto the maximum-security annex at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls, a 400-bed housing addition and improved laundry and food services at Springfield, and a 200-bed minimum-security trusty unit in the Black Hills. Thanks to aid from the federal government, state government will have to provide just 10 percent of the funding, according to Rep. Jim Putnam, R-Armour, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. The bill will next be considered by the state Senate. |
